The Apostle Paul poses a series of logical questions in the latter part of Romans chapter ten. In the midst of this progression, he asks an interesting question, “…and how shall they hear without a preacher?” Every time I read this interrogative statement, my heart is touched!
The Book of Romans is a treasure chest of Christian writing. Theologians have intimated that every major Christian doctrine is made reference to in this epistle and it has served as a well worn pathway for the astute soul-winner when leading sinners to Christ. When you reach the tenth chapter of Romans, the Apostle Paul bares his soul about his feelings for his people when he states that his prayer for them was that they would be saved! It is in this context that Paul asks how his people would hear how to be saved without a preacher to tell them.
(Romans 10:14-15) How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! (KJV)
The fact of the matter is that “every creature needs a preacher” (borrowed)! Every soul needs someone to share the message of Christ with them. In every new convert’s story there is the involvement of some preacher along the way. Only Omniscience can expound the extent of God’s long reach through the ages.
If we assume that the answer to Paul’s question is an emphatic, “NO, they won’t hear!”, then what must happen? What can you and I do with respect to this question? Can we do anything to help insure that people can hear a preacher? The answer to this question is… YES!
Some Things We CAN Do:
- We can pray for people to have a chance to hear a preacher…
- We can invest our time, talent and treasure to help preachers get to the people groups we/they are praying for…
- We can personally be the preacher, as God leads, to reach the folks around us with the gospel of Christ!
